ANALOG LAB
Get creative with hands-on vintage tech.
Learn how to incorporate non-digital visual elements into your digital workflow—or keep it entirely low-fi. You'll explore a treasure trove of media archaeology to create stories, light installations, performance visuals, and experimental imagery.
Participants will work with vintage Japanese ELMO overhead projectors. Cut paper and select colors from chromatic gels, textures, water, paints, and other provided materials.
Think shadow puppet shows, 1960s psychedelic rock visuals, and handmade special effects used by filmmakers such as Aronofsky and Gondry, as well as pioneers of experimental cinema.
I've taught versions of this workshop at Pixar, DreamWorks, CalArts, juvenile hall, Zen monasteries, and museums—it's always a good time!
We'll begin with an introduction to the history, inspiration, and creative possibilities of analog projection. A guided exercise will familiarize you with the materials and techniques before you move into creating your own work. You’re welcome to photograph and film your creations.
We'll conclude by exploring ways to integrate your analog experiments into digital projects and answer questions about future creative applications. If there's interest, future sessions may expand to include 16mm film projection, painted slides, basic shadow puppetry, and more.
