Building Sustainable Creative Careers in the Age of AI
The creative economy is booming. AI is transforming how creative work is made, discovered, distributed and valued.
But are artists benefiting?
For many independent creatives, building a sustainable career remains difficult. Opportunities are fragmented. Visibility doesn't necessarily translate into income. Artists are navigating platforms, algorithms, intermediaries and now AI systems—while trying to find the time and resources to actually make their work.
During UN General Assembly High-Level Week and Climate Week NYC, the Arts and Culture Working Group/ImPACT Coalition is bringing artists, creatives and others working across the global creative economy together to explore a fundamental question:
What will it take for artists to build sustainable creative careers in the age of AI?
And by sustainable, we mean both economic sustainability and environmental responsibility.
We'll explore artist livelihoods, ownership and agency; the changing economics of creative work; AI's impact on artists and the environment; access to opportunities; creative identity and discoverability; and what an artist-centered creative economy could look like.
We'll also be introducing two new intiatives:
We, the Artists - artist-led group amplifying the voices of artists and creatives
Culture for Artists - cultural organizations committing to help us recenter the artist in the cultural and creative economy movement
The gathering is being co-curated with singer-songwriter Mijori Goodwin and Irojim, a creative wellness company using music, storytelling and healing-centered experiences to amplify underrepresented voices.
We'll also officially introduce REPPED, the AI Artist Manager and provide participating creatives with FREE Smart Portfolios.
