Lunch Series: Celtic Conversations with Bill Spawton
This regular lunch series will feature insights and an engaging presentation from a special guest speaker in our community, over a delicious catered set lunch and the opportunity to connect with fellow club members in a welcoming setting.
This month’s Celtic Conversations features Bill Spawton, a lifelong lover of Welsh poetry and culture. Born and raised in Carmarthen in West Wales, Bill has lived in Melbourne for over forty years, where he has been an active member of the Melbourne Welsh Male Choir for twenty-four years, frequently performing as MC at their concerts.
In this session, Bill will read and discuss poetry by Dylan Thomas and Waldo Williams. Dylan Thomas, one of the finest Welsh poets of the twentieth century, wrote exclusively in English, but the rhythms and musicality of spoken Welsh deeply influenced his style. Waldo Goronwy Williams, a leading Welsh-language poet, pacifist, and nationalist, wrote in the uniquely Welsh poetic form Cynghanedd, which translates beautifully into English. Bill will present selections in both English and the original Cymraeg (Welsh), offering a rich experience of the poetry both for appreciation and sheer listening pleasure.
Your ticket price includes presentation and insights from our guest speaker and a catered two course set lunch prepared by Chef Dargan and the Wild Geese team.
