Broken Window Hackathon #1
Ever wondered why things around you are broken? Ever wanted to fix them?
The Broken Windows Theory tells us that fixing small & visible problems often ladders-up to higher standards and expectations in other areas.
Join us for a weekend of tech & policy hacking and help us fix some of the small things in the UK. FutureHouse.uk is hosting this community hackathon of builders in tech and public policy to find solutions fast, starting in our hometown of London. Details below!
Making government govern better takes gruelling campaigning, story telling, and data collection. From eternally broken escalators to cracked pavements. From uncollected bins to abandoned street-cones. Start fixing your pet-peeve by learning why things are broken, and kick-start the campaign to get it fixed.
Why broken windows?
“Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner/ that I love London town” - Hubert Gregg
Charity starts at home, and so does progress. London is home to nearly nine million dreamers, builders, sinners and saints, and people just looking to get by. It is a global capital of economic, scientific and social change - a city on a hill. But walking down the streets, it doesn’t feel that way. Plate glass and pavement cracked, litter strewn. Public services creaking under hopeless demand. Decay, rather than growth. Beautiful architecture and functional infrastructure are mostly relics of our grandparents’ generation and their predecessors.
What if we treated the causes of malaise by treating the symptoms first? If we fix the broken windows, maybe the skyscrapers and flying cars will follow?
London can be greater.
Join us at Future House for a community hackathon focussed on everyday problems plaguing the city. We are putting together a select group of builders, technologists, policymakers and officials to save the city - one pothole at a time, if that’s what it takes.
