Knowledge Exchange Session | October 14th, 5:00 PM CET
Topic: Future BIOSECURITY: AI Enables Predictive Water Quality
Speaker: Marcel Werle, Business Development Manager, MANN+HUMMEL Group

This session explores how AI-driven approaches can strengthen biosecurity and water quality management in controlled environment agriculture. Biological contamination and disease risks in recirculating irrigation systems remain a persistent challenge, even with advanced disinfection technologies such as ultrafiltration, UV, and ozone.

Marcel Werle will introduce practical use cases for applying AI in water management, including real-time contamination risk prediction, anomaly detection, adaptive disinfection control, and dynamic nutrient dosing aligned with plant growth and water quality.

The discussion will also address key barriers to implementation—such as limited labeled data, context-specific variability, and model interpretability—and translate these into actionable considerations for improving system reliability.

Finally, participants will examine how the FarmTech Society network can support the wider adoption of AI through shared data frameworks, benchmarking standards, and open pilot projects.
