About Event

For this book club, we will be reading Patrick McGee’s bestselling Apple in China. The book offers a richly detailed account of how Apple built one of the most complex and efficient manufacturing and supply-chain systems in modern history, and how China became an indispensable pillar of the world’s most valuable company.

This is a global business story about Apple, but it is also a story inseparable from China at its very core: industrial policy, labor, globalization, technology transfer, supply chains, and the complex, intimate relationship between Silicon Valley and Chinese manufacturing. How does Apple’s China story help us understand the last three decades of globalization? What did China gain in the process, and what did it lose? And now that both the United States and China are rethinking dependency, security, and technological sovereignty, how should we understand this relationship?

We also want to take a step back and discuss the reception of the book itself. More than a year after publication, Apple in China continues to attract attention across business, technology, policy, and China-watching circles. What explains its popularity? Why does a story about Apple, Chinese manufacturing, and global supply chains still feel so urgent today?

In previous sessions, our Book Club has read and discussed works including Breakneck, Abundance, Wall Dancers, Other Rivers, and Butter. As always, this session will be conducted in Chinese. We will approach the book from perspectives both inside and outside China, with curiosity, nuance, and a healthy skepticism toward overly simple narratives.

Patrick McGee will join us for the final 30 minutes to answer questions. The Q&A segment will be conducted in English.
