About Event

Our NYC Black Girl Environmentalist Hub is hosting a community breakfast on Monday, September 21st, at the Bench (49 Elizabeth St, 6th floor, New York, NY 10013). This breakfast is curated in honor of the Black Panthers, but specifically the Black women who have built Black liberation movements into a global effort to pursue the greatest quality of life and justice for women, children, and all who are marginalized, including the environment and the impact of a changing climate on Black communities. OBSIDIAN: Rooted + Radiant kicks off the morning with an intergenerational breakfast and conversation with prolific frontline leaders and Black feminists born and bred in New York City:

  • Najha Zigbi-Johnson, author of ‘Mapping Malcolm ’, Columbia Press 2024

  • Yasmeen Amatul Allaah Majid: New African, Black Panther Party (BPP) veteran,
    mother, grandmother.

We will close this breakfast out with a herbalism activation for folks to make natural hair and skin care products and the launch of BGE Lorena James’ Book Club of Farmer Cee’s ‘Black Girls Guide to Building a Boutique Farm’. This day is rooted in helping attendees leave reflecting more deeply on how they start their day as a reflection of nature and ecology. We move people to start this climate week with the same young Black Women, now matriarchs, and their community who built a movement of resistance and liberation for all Black people, but an intersectional movement for all.
