Effective Altruism (EA) x Progress Studies Meet-up | London
Update: we are on the Lakeside Terrace. One organiser is wearing a light-blue EA shirt. I’m wearing a black coat and holding a sign.
If you can see this post, you (and any friends who might also be interested) are invited to an afternoon Effective Altruism (EA) x Progress Studies hangout on Sunday 27th July at Barbican Kitchen in London.
We’ll be trading thoughts on effective altruism, progress studies, innovation policy, R&D and more. You’ll meet a bunch of other fascinating people doing cool things.
For more info on Effective Altruism, see: https://www.effectivealtruism.org
For more info on Progress Studies, see: https://rootsofprogress.org
The hangout will start at 4pm (although feel free to drop by later) and should end around 6pm.
When:
16:00 to 18:00 on Sunday 27 July
Where:
Barbican Kitchen - outside space (also known as Lakeside Terrace); Silk St, Barbican, London EC2Y 8DS
Some themes we might explore:
How should we conceptualise the trade-off between the benefits of technological progress and x-risk?
Which opportunities for progress offer the most clear Pareto improvement in terms of direct welfare gains and x-risk reduction?
Are ideas getting harder to find?
Are developments in biomedicine currently underrated relative to AI: among the public? Policymakers? Private sector?
To what extent can we expect R&D to be automated in the future? And in what timeframe?
How will reduced US public research funding affect progress and civilisational resilience? How should civil society respond?
Feel free to bring along your own topics to explore.
Hope to see you there :)
