In Japan’s deep mountain valleys lives the char, a fish whose ecology remains little understood. Through the work of researchers, fishery cooperatives and anglers, filmmaker Asato Sakamoto observes the challenges facing the species, including stocking, dams and erosion-control structures, and asks what it means to protect a species and its habitat.
