About Event

The Oxford Artificial Intelligence Society invites you to a thought-provoking panel debate: Are We Living in an AI Gold rush?

Artificial intelligence is attracting unprecedented investment, media attention, and public fascination. Venture capital is flowing, startups are multiplying, and valuations are soaring. But beneath the momentum lies a critical question, are we witnessing a sustainable technological revolution, or the early stages of a speculative gold rush?

Bringing together Sivesh Sukumar (Balderton Capital), Aaliya Raza (Oxford Seed Fund) and DR Ole Teutloff (Oxford Internet Institute), this panel will critically examine whether today’s AI surge reflects durable economic transformation or familiar bubble dynamics. Drawing on historical precedents, from past AI booms and winters to previous technology hype cycles, the discussion will explore the economic, ethical, and societal forces shaping the current moment.

We will interrogate difficult questions:
Is capital being allocated to genuine innovation or to narrative?
Are today’s valuations grounded in productivity gains, or in expectation?
What distinguishes real technical progress from hype?
And if this is a bubble, what happens next?

Designed for students, founders, and investors interested in the intersection of AI, economics, and venture capital, this session aims to move beyond headlines and examine the structural realities driving today’s AI ecosystem.

Join us on 6th March, 18:00–19:30 at Keble College, Oxford (OX1 3PG) for an honest and rigorous conversations.
