Weaves of Change-A World Ocean Day Celebration
Join us for an afternoon of community, embracing creativity and reflecting on the role of the ocean in planetary wellbeing ahead of World Ocean Day! Experience For the Love of Seaweed, an interactive & educational art exhibition by Laiyonelth Hurtado that invites you to discover the power of seaweed as a climate solution and the interdependence of coastal communities with the ocean through photographs, textile art, audio, and biomaterials at the Climate Imaginarium.
The exhibition is a continuation of a collaboration between Pinterest and Intersectional Environmentalist for a live recording of The Joy Report at the Marketplace of the Future during NY Climate Week 2025, where Laiyonelth Hurtado was commissioned to create artwork inspired by the ocean. Through works made out of upcycled and deadstock materials, the exhibition sparks conversations about circularity and invites people to embrace creativity while taking action.
This day of action includes a cyanotyping with seaweed workshop led by Laiyonelth and a conversation with fellow ocean defenders Hanna Testa & Mark Haver.
Laiyonelth Hurtado is an Afro-Colombian interdisciplinary artist based in New York since 2017, exploring the intersections of art, fashion, environmentalism, hospitality, storytelling, and social justice. A believer of hope and joy as a force for change, with a keen interest in humanizing the climate crisis and helping people reconnect with one another and Mother Earth. Laiyonelth is a community builder and co-founder of Synergy Social, a community that promotes planetary wellness. Their practice involves textile art, tablescaping, upcycling, and a newfound love for e-waste, biomaterials, and large-scale installations.
Hannah Testa is a nationally recognized environmental advocate and founder of Hannah4Change. She has spent her life advancing climate action, plastic pollution awareness, and youth empowerment through education, policy advocacy, and grassroots organizing. By age ten, she identified plastic pollution as one of the most urgent and solvable environmental crises. Since then, she has led campaigns and initiatives at the local, national, and global levels, including creating Plastic Pollution Awareness Day in Georgia and helping influence Fulton County’s decision to phase out single-use plastics on government properties.
Mark Haver is a fierce campaigner for action on ocean, climate, and sustainable fashion. He is known for working across and building the youth movement across these different issue areas over the past six years. He previously worked for Sustainable Ocean Alliance, where he led SOA’s policy strategy, campaigns at the ocean-climate nexus, and the campaign against deep-sea mining in the US and Canada. Now working with clients including Youth Climate Collaborative, and FutureSwell, where he is focusing on strategy for advocacy, community building, and digital mobilization.
Come, connect, create, have fun, make new friends, learn something new, and take action for our shared home. Make waves <3
