About Event

Short hook: AI can generate options. It still cannot taste the ice cream for you.

Opening

September has a way of sharpening the questions.

Kids go back to school. Teachers face another year of policies chasing tools that changed last week. Parents wonder what counts as learning when the answer machine is always nearby. Workers watch tasks they spent years mastering become buttons. Artists keep asking whether faster output means better work or just more noise.

Here is the part we cannot skip: you are still the original intelligence.

AI can draft, remix, summarize, classify, imitate, and predict. It can produce a thousand options before your coffee cools. But it cannot decide what you value. It cannot know what your community needs. It cannot feel the difference between clever and true. It cannot eat the ice cream for you.

September is about the human skills that get more important when the tools get easier: taste, judgment, consent, attention, courage, memory, patience, and the ability to say no when the machine offers something fast but wrong.

This Month's Question

What human skills get more valuable when the machines get easier to use?

Speakers

Speakers are TBA while we confirm the local lineup.

This month is a good fit for educators, students, parents, artists, coaches, librarians, youth workers, designers, and anyone thinking about the human side of learning with AI in the room.

We are looking for grounded talks, examples, and questions. Not final answers. Nobody has those.

What To Expect

• A back-to-school frame without turning the meetup into a school board meeting. • Talks or examples about learning, creativity, judgment, and human development. • Room for parents, students, teachers, and non-technical folks to speak plainly. • Practical conversation about how people stay capable when tools keep absorbing tasks.

This one is for anyone who suspects the real AI curriculum starts with knowing yourself.

Who Should Come

Come if you teach, parent, study, mentor, hire, coach, make art, run a team, or quietly worry that everyone is moving too fast to ask what learning is for.

Come if you are using AI and want to use it with more taste.

Come if you are skeptical and still willing to sit with people who are trying.

You do not need a technical background. You do need a little honesty about what these tools are doing to attention, skill, and identity.

About Comox Valley AI

Comox Valley AI is the BC + AI regional chapter for Courtenay, Comox, Cumberland, Campbell River, and the wider Island.

The chapter is currently co-led by Kris Krüg, Steve Jones, Colin Fitzgerald, and Mel DiPietro.

We bring builders, artists, educators, parents, public servants, founders, skeptics, students, and curious neighbours into the same room to understand AI without the hype, the panic, or the sales pitch.

The Island has its own shape: practical, creative, community-first, and allergic to nonsense. That is the spirit here. Curious AND critical. Both hands full. Real people figuring it out together.

About BC + AI

BC + AI Ecosystem Association is a registered nonprofit building community-driven AI spaces across British Columbia.

We help people learn in public, share what is real, ask better questions, and build local capacity around AI with ethics, creativity, transparency, and public good in the room from the beginning.
