Designing the Final Frontier
When people think of space, they picture rockets and engineers. They don't usually picture designers. But every satellite service, mission control screen and space-powered app on your phone was designed by someone. Most of them could be designed better.
We're teaming up with the Designers in Space Community (DiSC) for an evening on why design matters in the space sector. We'll also look at the deep tech behind it and where that tech ends up, in orbit and on the ground.
Expect a look at:
Why the space sector needs design, and what designers actually bring to it
The deep tech driving space today
How space technology is applied in space itself
How the same technology solves problems back on Earth
Format
Joel Freedman opens with a sharing of around 30 minutes, joining us live online. That's followed by a hands-on group activity of around an hour: you'll split into groups, pick a problem and come up with your own solutions, using what you've just heard.
Who should come?
Designers, developers, engineers, students, and anyone curious about space. You don't need any background in space or design. Come ready to think, team up and build ideas with people you haven't met yet.
About the speaker
Joel Freedman is a deeptech commercialisation expert and Director of HotCell. He is also Head of Innovation Services at the Satellite Applications Catapult and Director of Opportunity Creation at the Designers in Space Community. He has nearly a decade of experience in the sector, working across academia, industry and government around the world. His work applies design thinking and systems innovation to complex social, environmental and industrial problems.
