Texas Venture Group is hosting YC Partner Jared Friedman and SalesPatriot CEO Nelson Ray at UT Austin to talk about the new wave of defense startups. They'll talk about building startups in regulated markets like defense (it's actually not as painful as it sounds) and how to get started.
They'll hang out afterwards and would love to meet students over some BBQ, whether you're interested in building startups or just want to learn more about it.
What's SalesPatriot? They're building AI for military parts distributors—basically helping defense contractors navigate the nightmare of government procurement. They've raised over $6M from YC, Pear, CRV, and Paul Graham, and they're hiring forward deployed software engineers who want to work directly with customers. They're actively hiring new grads and interns who want to work at a fast-growing startup and learn from the best.
Who's Nelson? He interned at a defense company and saw how antiquated the procurement process was. Then he and his cofounders dropped out of college to build SalesPatriot to fix the problems he saw firsthand.
Who's Jared? He co-founded Scribd (YC '06), which became a top 100 website. Now he's a Group Partner at YC where he's worked with over 1,000 startups. He's also actively funding UT Austin undergrads and grad students who are interested in building startups.
