About Event

Ever thought about turning one of your life stories into a kids’ book?
Picture your message planting a seed in a little heart, shaping how they see the world - or becoming a whimsical keepsake of a belief that’s shaped you.

Calling all storytellers, poets, illustrators, designers, educators, caregivers, and curious friends!

In this 3–4 hour creative sprint, we’ll distill lived experiences into simple, joyful stories for children ages 4–6. We’ll leave with a drafted storyline and 3–5 illustrated pages per team—something tangible to keep shaping after the event.

Why join

  • Turn a meaningful life lesson into a child-friendly story (e.g., combating loneliness and building community).

  • Collaborate across roles—writers + artists + idea-sparkers.

  • Learn a repeatable, lightweight framework for kidlit storytelling (clear arc, simple language, big feelings).

  • Make something delightful in one afternoon.

What we’ll make

Each team will pick a theme (e.g., “loneliness to belonging,” “trying new foods,” “sharing,” “asking for help”) and craft:

  • A 1–2 sentence premise and a kid-appropriate moral/feeling

  • A 12–16 beat outline with page-by-page notes (very short lines)

  • 3–5 sketched pages (thumbnail roughs or simple spreads) with placeholder text

  • A next-steps plan for finishing the book after the sprint

Who should come

You don’t have to be a “writer” or “artist.” If you can offer ideas, feedback, or doodles, you belong. Roles we’ll mix and match:

  • Story gardeners (idea-shapers, structure, theme)

  • Word weavers (dialogue, rhythm, read-aloud flow)

  • Picture-makers (illustrators, layout tinkerers, lettering)

  • Kid-whisperers (parents, teachers, child-dev folks for age fit)

  • Glue people (project managers, editors, vibe keepers)

The flow

  1. Warm-up & inspiration

    • 3 quick read-alouds of great picture-book sentences.

    • Mini-primer: writing for 4–6 year-olds (simple words, repetition, big emotions, clear arc).

  2. Story Seeding

    • Solo/duo brainstorming using prompts:
“A time I felt left out and what helped…”
“A tiny courage that changed my day…”
      “How I found my people…”

    • Pick one premise. Name the feeling journey (e.g., “lonely → curious → brave → connected”).

  3. Plot Garden

    • Map a 12–16 beat outline (one beat ≈ one page).

    • Pin a refrain kids can repeat (e.g., “One friend at a time.”).

    • Choose a simple setting and 2–3 characters with clear shapes/colors.

  4. Art Sprint

    • Create 3–5 page thumbnails (stick-figures welcome!).

    • Pair text + image; mark where the page turns add surprise.

    • Light touch on typography/lettering for a title page.

  5. Show & Glow

    • 3-minute share-outs.

    • Gentle feedback using “I smiled when… I wondered if… I’d love to see…”

  6. Wrap & Next Steps

    • Save files; pick a post-sprint date to finish a first full draft.

    • Optional: form a 3-week micro-feedback circle.

Example theme you can join

“From Lonely to Connected: Finding My Circle”
A kid who eats lunch alone tries one tiny brave act each day—saying hi, bringing a game, asking to sit together—until they discover that belonging grows one small hello at a time.

What we will provide:

  • Paper sketchbook & pens/markers

  • Post-its, tape, scissors

  • Printed templates (beats, page thumbnails)

Vibes

  • Warm space for encouraging and exchanging stories

  • Quiet corner + sensory breaks

  • Feedback is strengths-first and consent-based

  • Clear language, kindness, cultural respect

Deliverables you’ll leave with

  • A shareable one-pager (premise, audience, moral)

  • A beat-by-beat outline for a 12–16 page picture book

  • 3–5 sketched pages (thumbnails or rough spreads)

  • A simple finishing plan with your team

Let’s plant seeds that little readers will carry with them—one small hello at a time. 🌱📚
