A Free Poetry Workshop on Writing Shame

Shame isolates. It convinces us we are alone in our experiences, our bodies, our stories. But on the page, we can gain agency and write about shame in ways that are surprising and compelling to read.

In this hands-on, generative workshop, you’ll:

  • get a short introduction to the emotion of shame

  • read and discuss two contemporary poems that engage shame in different formal and emotional ways

  • receive generative prompts that help you access risky material while keeping artistic agency

  • have dedicated writing time

  • have the option to share your work in a supportive, gentle environment

This workshop is the last part of a two-part series on writing shame:

Part 1 (scheduled for February 21) will focus on distance and elements of surprise.

Part 2 (this workshop) will center on role play and movement in shame poems.

Each session can be attended independently — no prior experience required.

By the way: I am currently accepting submissions for my anthology SHAME/less until March 31. Participants in this workshop are warmly invited to submit new poems inspired by the session — or to revise and re-submit earlier work if the process changes your approach.

Come ready to experiment, take risks, and turn isolation into language. Your most powerful poems may be waiting inside what you’ve been afraid to say.

By signing up for this workshop, you agree to receive occasional updates from me about future workshops, events, and opportunities.
