"On Chain Perps — More Than Just Hype?" by Ran Hammer, Chief Business Officer (CBO), Orbs
Perpetual futures trading has exploded from $11.6 trillion in 2022 to over $80 trillion annualized in 2025, yet DeFi's market share remains stubbornly stuck at 4-5% despite massive absolute growth. This talk examines why on-chain perps are lagging behind CeFi, exploring the tradeoffs between AMM-based models (like GMX), order book approaches (like Hyperliquid), and the emerging intent-based execution model that has already transformed spot trading through protocols like UniswapX and 1inch. We'll look at how intent-based infrastructure can tap into both on-chain and off-chain liquidity sources to dramatically improve capital efficiency, and explore hybrid solutions combining order books with intent-based execution as a potential path to finally capture meaningful market share from centralized venues.
