Join us for a guided exhibition tour at Mendes Wood DM exploring A Serene Look Upon the World, a group exhibition bringing together a wide constellation of artists working across painting, sculpture, installation, and image-based practices.

Something in the breeze and the silence precedes the raging storm, a silent lesson about the fine line between permanence and transformation. In this gap, between the unknown of what lies ahead and what insists on remaining still, certain artistic gestures take shape, offering the senses the possibility of a pause before the vertigo.

This encounter invites slow looking and shared reflection, opening up space for dialogue around works that hold tension between stillness and transformation, presence and disappearance.

A Serene Look Upon the World brings together artists including Paulo Nazareth, Marie Zolamian, Lucas Arruda, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Lee Ufan, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, Rosana Paulino, Coco Fusco, Patricia Leite, Antonio Obá, Sally von Rosen, and others.

The exhibition unfolds as a meditation on perception and the sublime, where artistic gestures create moments of suspension and attention. Across abstraction, material experimentation, and poetic language, the works form an interconnected field of practices that resist fixed interpretation.

Moving between atmosphere, object, and image, the exhibition invites the viewer into a slower rhythm of looking, where meaning emerges through proximity, time, and relation.

My take on the exhibit, by Art Gallivant 🖋️:

This exhibition includes some of my favourite artists, and I am especially looking forward to sharing a show that speaks to key artistic and historical movements I deeply engage with. It is striking to see artists referencing what, for many of us, feels like a contemporary form of a “middle passage” — a space of ongoing displacement, suspension, and unresolved movement that echoes across histories and presents.

There's something in our current coping or survival that resonates; these works hold space between stillness and transformation, inviting a slower, more attentive way of looking. In conversation, they open up questions around perception, materiality, and how meaning is constructed through time and presence.
