About Event

The DFS young professional community will meet again at the #4th Dialogue for Space, bringing together speakers from various disciplines on Space Exploration: Decoding the Cosmos with Space missions, Mathematics, and Astronomy.

Space Exploration:

If you ask ten people what the word ‘Space’ means, you might be surprised to get ten singular answers. Each response could be correct in its own way. Even among experts, there is no single boundary where space truly begins, it depends on what you are trying to understand. For some engineers, space may be an extreme physical environment where the limits of temperature, vacuum, and motion are tested. For mathematicians, it is something to be described through complex models enabling us an understanding or prediction of the behaviour of the systems surrounding us. And for astronomers and astrophysicists, space becomes a laboratory; one we observe through light and gravitational waves to uncover the life cycle of stars, black holes, and even the history of our origin.

Speaker Line-Up

On Tuesday, 31 March at 19.30 in Leiden, we bring together two young professionals and one expert from different perspectives on stage:

  • Valeriya Korol: The Theoretical Astrophysicist.

  • Gabriël Gelissen: The Aerospace Engineer turning to Applied Mathematics.

  • Nelleke Theijssen: Educator, Astronomer, and Science Communicator

Special Contributions

This event is possibly made in support of SRON, NEBULA Xplorer, Catalyze Group, and Space Oasis Delft. At the end of the Dialogue, short introductions from the following speakers will take place:

  • Retmer Tak, President of L.A.D. ‘F. Kaiser’ (Leiden Astronomy Society) and Astronomy scholar at Leiden University will present their mission, and share their activities which they are organizing to connect the astronomy community, including the renowned annual “Spring Lectures” at the oldest observatory of the Netherlands; Leiden Old Observatory (Sterrewacht). True Galaxy Guardians by heart! 🗝️🔭

  • Valentina Quiroga will represent Catalyze Group. She is a Junior Business Developer and EU Funding Specialist, with a Nanobiology background and expertise spanning Physics and Geosciences.

  • Friso Eigenhuis will give a short pitch on the space mission. With a background in Physics, Astronomy, and Aerospace Engineering, he was one of the pioneers working on the NEBULA-Xplorer.

  • Maarten Smits will also give a short pitch. He is a student at TU Delft with a strong interest in biotechnology and pharmacology, currently serving as Team Captain at Space Oasis Delft

About Dialogue for Space

Dialogue for Space is an initiative that addresses the "fascination-decline" that, according to the European Space Policy Institute, many young people experience during their first encounter with the space industry. We aim to tackle this issue by building a strong European and hybrid community where young professionals and industry experts connect and exchange ideas, and fostering new collaborations.

Our approach is based on the following three pillars:

★ Monthly Dialogue sessions without high entry barriers. In these sessions, two young professionals share the stage with an expert, followed by an open dialogue about the central theme.

★Through daily opportunities via LinkedIn, Instagram, and our Community Channel on WhatsApp we share links with tips, events, and opportunities to support career development.

★A podcast series where knowledge and current developments in the space sector are explored.
