Economics of Space Colonization: Econophysics of interplanetary capitalism and free market space colonization
Energy Density and Delta Vee define our relationship with the accessible volume of space which lies in our future, and the connectivity of causality in space time is largely determined by gravity, Humanity's "Enemy Number One"
To escape a gravity well we need impulse, delta-vee, a change in velocity. To sustain our ships in space we need energy, megajoules per kg of fuel and kilowatts per reactor mass.
The availability of energy in our solar system is not a one-size fits all answer - past the orbit of Mars, the inverse square law eats away at the effective areal power density of solar. The majority of the outer system is made of hydrogen, the fuel for fusion reactors, yet fusion reactor power densities have not yet been proved. Nuclear fission reactors with the highest energy density using Plutonium have a fuel half life of 92 years, and would need constantly refueling between the Stars. The interstellar hydrogen density seems just borderline of what would be required to sustain a Brussard ramjet to accelerate past 1% the speed of light. Is our only option a thermonuclear pusher plate Orion-style space craft?
These are the questions of the techno-capitalists of a Kardashev-Scaling civilization, and these are the questions and topics we will address at this event.
