About Event

Join the International Climate Councils Network (ICCN) and the South African Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) for an event showcasing climate councils, the official advisory bodies to governments on climate change, as innovative mechanisms for climate governance.

Climate councils can support governments by offering non-partisan, evidence-based advice, tracking progress on climate commitments, and enabling inclusive decision-making. They can also play a role in advising on NDC design and implementation, 'just transition' frameworks, and attracting critical adaptation finance. This event will explore lessons learned from the PCC and the Nigerian National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), how to design a council to fit within existing climate governance frameworks, and the readiness of other African countries to institutionalise such bodies.

Speakers will include:

  • Dr. Crispian Olver, Deputy Chair, South African Presidential Climate Commission (PCC)

  • Dumisani Nxumalo, Acting COO, PCC

  • Ibrahim Shelleng, Senior Special Assistant to the President (Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement), Nigerian National Council on Climate Change

  • Cat Abreu, Director, International Climate Politics Hub (ICPH) and Advisor, Canadian Net-Zero Advisory Body (NZAB)

  • Blessing Manale, Head of Communications, PCC

This event will feature an opening keynote address, a panel discussion sharing lessons from climate councils, Q&A, and closing remarks.

Registration to ACS2 conference required to attend. Find us in the African Development Bank Pavilion. Please register for reminders and updates about this event, but kindly note that seats will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis.
