About Event

From Chaos to Cosmos: Suffering and Redemption in Nature

George Handley, Professor of Environmental Humanities at Brigham Young University, will explore the crossroads between hope and despair, restoration and destruction, in both the natural world and human soul. Any approach to earth care must account for the terrifying uncertainties, but also profound beauties, inherent in creation. Literature, more than science or data, can marshal hope and stir the imagination necessary to confront the void. In his book Literature and Ecotheology: From Chaos to Cosmos, Handley studies four American writers—Annie Dillard, Cormac McCarthy, Marilynne Robinson, and David James Duncan—who wrestle the mysteries of environmental theodicy. This cooperation between literature and ecology points to a deeper stewardship of planet and soul. A Q&A will follow. Free Admission. Donations appreciated.

This event is organized by Books & Bridges — a humanities forum of ideas and conversation. Our mission is to facilitate discussion on the best of human thought. We explore the wisdoms of the world and apply them to modern life. We have no political, religious or ideological affiliation. In a society divided by uncivil discourse, the beauty of the humanities—novels, history, philosophy, poetry, ethics and epics—lifts us to our better angels. In our busy world we need space for friends and fellow learners to do a little more heart-to-heart and mind-to-mind.
