Open Lab: December 17th, 2025 – Movement, Improvisation, agency and agent

​This coming Wednesday's Open Lab continues our exploration of movement, improvisation, and agency, with the presence of a artificial agent we've been building.

​For this session, the agent will mostly take a back seat: quietly observing, remembering, and then generating a short “storyline” based on what unfolds on the dance floor. Of course, this idea will evolve once we get into the studio.

​Improvisation depends on human agency. But what happens when you drop an artificial agent into the mix? Our agent “observes” movement and relationships among dancers, offering feedback and inputs drawn from its observations and a large pool of stored knowledge. It has memory, but its “personality” is entirely malleable—easily altered, with no agency of its own.

​This makes it a perfect tool for us to poke, prod, and play with as we investigate how technology can shape, disrupt, or illuminate improvisational practice.

​Please meet at the ODC lobby at 7:30pm for a brief conversation and planning session before we move into the studio. You can find me with a large iPad in my hand sitting in a sofa.

​Open Lab is a space for curiosity, experimentation, and collective ideation. Come move, sense, and play with us as we blur the boundaries between body, imagination, and machine.
