Beach Inna Bondage + Mataron a Pedro: A Caribbean Film Screening & Community Conversation

Presented by The BoriCollective × Borikén Podcast In collaboration with Alliance Française de Puerto Rico

Two islands. Two stories. A shared history of colonialism, resistance, and the ongoing struggle for liberation.

Join The BoriCollective and Borikén Podcast for a special screening of two powerful Caribbean films, Beach Inna Bondage and Mataron a Pedro, followed by a conversation exploring the lasting impacts of colonialism, the fight for self-determination, and the power of storytelling as an act of resistance.

FEATURED FILMS

Beach Inna Bondage - A 30-minute documentary examining the struggle over beach access, land rights, and power in Jamaica, raising critical questions about who controls the Caribbean's natural resources and who is being excluded. 🇯🇲Exploring the growing struggle for beach access in Jamaica. Since the 1950s, public access to the island’s beaches has steadily declined, leaving less than one percent of the coastline publicly accessible for Jamaicans. Over the decades, most of Jamaica’s beaches have been captured by private and tourist interests, and particularly since the 2000s large-scale hotel developments have limited beach access for Jamaicans. This film follows the grassroots movement resisting the privatization of Jamaican beaches by zooming in on three frontline struggles: Bob Marley Beach near Kingston, the Blue Lagoon in the parish of Portland, and Mammee Bay Beach on the island’s North Coast.

Beach Inna Bondage recently won the Award for Best Short Documentary at the ScreenShare Festival (hosted by CaribbeanTales x Caribbean Film Festival) and the Award for Best Documentary at the Caribbean Film Awards.

Mataron a Pedro (They Killed Pedro) - Directed by Kristian Mercado, this 16-minute narrative short brings to life the story of Puerto Rican revolutionary leader Pedro Albizu Campos, exploring colonial repression, resistance, and the enduring struggle for Puerto Rican independence. 🇵🇷
