REFUGIA: Mapping Climate Refuges

This past summer, Spain endured 61 days of heatwave conditions with an estimated 5,232 heat-related deaths, since tracking began. Many victims were highly vulnerable, many died alone, often less than ten minutes from a cool building or shaded park they never knew existed. This gap exists in cities worldwide: refuge zones exist, but trusted, real-time information rarely reaches the people who need it most.

We're former and emerging graduate students from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid's Sustainable Development and Global Governance program, looking to put our studies into action. Refugia’s vision is to be an open-source, citizen-science map of climate refuge zones, piloting in Madrid and Barcelona due to the rising heatwaves. We want to create accessible, easy-to-navigate refuges for all types of weather, right on people's phones. Join this open, conversational, hands-on workshop to discuss urban heat and citizen mapping — and if you're a software developer, help us build the platform!
