Are National Energy Plans Ready to Address Global 1.5°C Overshoot? Global Principles for Democratic, Renewable-Centred Power Planning
Rapidly scaling renewable energy is essential to limiting the scale and duration of a 1.5°C overshoot and bringing temperatures back below that threshold. This session will examine how countries can translate their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), long-term net-zero goals, and international renewable energy commitments into credible power-sector plans. It will explore how renewables can become a foundation of national economic and industrial planning, supported by energy efficiency, storage, grids, and flexibility resources.
The discussion will explore how countries can move beyond energy plans that lock in fossil fuel dependence and build renewable-centred pathways that are credible, resilient, and aligned with their NDCs and the 1.5°C goal. It will bring together perspectives on how civil society can push for transparent planning, realistic electricity-demand projections, and stronger government accountability, turning renewable energy pledges into a faster, fairer energy transition.
