One Codebase, Many Personalities: Conditional Beam Wiring in Spring Boot. Monthly Session with Engr. Innocent Ekweogu
There was a time when building Spring applications meant simply putting together controllers, services, repositories, and configuration classes until everything worked. As applications grew, however, the way we structure and configure those components became increasingly important. The same codebase may need to behave differently depending on the environment, the feature being enabled, or the specific use case.
This is where one of Spring Boot’s powerful features comes into play: Conditional Bean Wiring.
Instead of creating every bean unconditionally, Spring gives developers the ability to control which beans are created and wired based on specific conditions. This makes it possible for a single application codebase to support different implementations, configurations, and behaviours without turning the application into a maze of configuration and if statements.
Think about a system that needs different implementations depending on the environment, a particular dependency available on the classpath, an application property, or even whether another bean already exists. With conditional configuration, Spring Boot can make those decisions for you during application startup.
But how does this actually work under the hood? How does Spring decide which beans should exist? What happens when multiple implementations are available? And how can developers use conditional wiring to build applications that are flexible, maintainable, and easier to extend?
That’s the conversation we’re having at our next Naija Java User Group Monthly Session with Senior Engr. Innocent Ekweogu, Software Engineer @ Moniepoint, on “One Codebase, Many Personalities: Conditional Bean Wiring in Spring Boot.” Join us as we explore how Spring Boot’s conditional configuration mechanisms can give a single codebase different “personalities” depending on the conditions surrounding it.
