AI & Willing Servitude - Andreas Mogensen (Oxford University) + Q&A + Networking
🚀 Sentio
Sentio is a new initiative dedicated to building the digital minds field in London & beyond.
We're starting by hosting the Sentio Series - London events every couple of weeks, each combining a talk, Q&A, and networking.
Talks will be delivered by leading and emerging researchers, exploring technical, philosophical and governance questions in areas such as AI consciousness, sentience, agency, and welfare.
A home for Londoners working on or interested in digital minds to gather regularly. Certain events will also be streamed remotely for those outside of London.
🎙️ Event
Andreas Mogensen (Oxford University) will present his working paper 'AI & Willing Servitude', followed by a Q&A and networking.
Paper abstract: A number of philosophers have recently argued that it would be wrong for us to create willing AI servants that are sentient and have sophisticated cognitive abilities similar to our own. I try to show that their arguments fail, but that we are nonetheless right to be disturbed at the prospect of AI systems with human-like moral status that serve us gladly and enthusiastically, in light of the fact that something demeaning is thereby conveyed about their status. Nonetheless, it need not follow that it is flat out wrong for us to create willing AI servants.
