CHINA

With respect to climate and the environment, China is observed, understood and debated in often-conflicting terms: as the world leader on green tech and as a coal-clouded bogeyman. As a country whose internal policies and ideas have lent it a relationship to nature that has been, at different times, motivated by harmony and by conquest. And as Western states, the US chief among them, increasingly position themselves in opposition to China while reneging on their own climate commitments, there are uncomfortable questions to be asked about the place of democracy in a time of climate crisis. All of this and more, the contributions to Issue 4 take head on, asking how we might understand the country’s contradictions while addressing an inescapable truth: that there is no route out of the climate crisis that does not pass through China.

Featuring essays and writing by Adrienne Buller, David Fishman, Deborah Seligsohn, Iza Ding, James Jackson, Jared Paolini, Jeremy Wallace, John Merrick, Judith Shapiro, Kaiser Kuo, Kamil Ahsan, Martin Vrba, Mathias Larsen, Matt Myers, Michelle Chen, Thomas White, Yan Lianke
