The Psychology of the Paris Agreement w/ Paul Watkinson
The Paris Agreement remains one of the most important diplomatic breakthroughs in climate history. Yet beyond the legal text and political architecture, its success was also shaped by human factors: trust-building, emotional intelligence, coalition dynamics, legitimacy, strategic facilitation, and psychological safety.
This session explores the often invisible human infrastructure behind COP21.
Co-hosted by Paul Watkinson, France’s former chief climate negotiator, key architect of the Paris Agreement, and former Chair of SBSTA, and Janna Hoppmann, climate psychologist and founder of ClimateMind, this facilitated dialogue reflects on what made cooperation possible under extraordinary political complexity—and what current and future COP Presidencies can learn from it.
Drawing on insider reflections from the Paris process and emerging work on negotiation psychology, the session will explore:
how trust was intentionally built across divides
how legitimacy and inclusion shaped buy-in
how emotional pressure and uncertainty were managed
how coalition dynamics enabled convergence
and what forms of leadership helped move beyond deadlock
Rather than focusing on negotiation substance, the conversation examines the deeper psychological and relational conditions that made the Paris Agreement possible.
This is the first session of a two-part dialogue series on the psychology of climate diplomacy and implementation.
