Thinkers' Club Debate Meetup #5 [Can the AI boom survive its own appetite?]
A little context first:
AI is scaling at an extraordinary pace but that growth requires enormous amounts of computing power, chips, data centres, electricity, water and capital. The bigger AI gets, the more resources it consumes.
The two sides of the argument -
For:
AI’s resource and infrastructure demands are growing faster than we can sustainably support. If every company keeps scaling models and compute at this pace, the economics, energy requirements and environmental costs could eventually become the bottleneck.
Against:
Every major technological revolution has required massive infrastructure investment. AI could drive improvements in chips, energy, data centres and efficiency that make the technology dramatically less resource intensive over time. The current appetite may simply be the cost of building the next major technological layer.
So now the question comes to:
Are we building the infrastructure for the next technological revolution or are we creating an AI industry that needs more resources than the world can afford?

Thinkers' Club is a space for people who are deep thinkers and enjoy reading and better conversations.
We started it because it’s surprisingly hard to find people who want to go beyond small talk, people who enjoy exploring ideas, challenging assumptions, and hearing perspectives different from their own.
We host debate and discussion sessions around topics spanning technology, AI, business, health, society, philosophy and human behavior and more..
No speakers or lectures. Just a small group want to find their intellectual friend circle.
How to join: Register for the event below. Since we keep these discussions small, spots are limited.
