From Planting to Proof in Mangrove Restoration: Lessons from East Africa
About This Session
Join the Nature Tech Collective for a Nature in Action conversation with Veritree, exploring how data, technology, and community partnerships are enabling large-scale, verifiable mangrove restoration in East Africa.
This session will spotlight Veritree’s flagship mangrove projects in Kenya and Tanzania, developed in partnership with the nonprofit Earth Lungs, with expansion planned into Mozambique and beyond. Mangroves are among the world’s most powerful carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots - yet they are also highly vulnerable to degradation from logging, charcoal production, and land conversion.
Through this real-world case study, we’ll examine how Veritree combines field-level data collection, drone mapping, and biodiversity monitoring with strong community engagement and long-term stewardship to deliver credible, transparent restoration outcomes - without relying on carbon crediting models.
Key Topics We’ll Cover
Why Mangroves Matter
Understand the climate, biodiversity, and livelihood value of mangrove ecosystems, and why restoring degraded mangroves in East Africa is both urgent and impactful.
Community-Led Restoration in Practice
Learn how Veritree works with local communities - from education and consent to seasonal and full-time employment - ensuring restoration efforts are locally supported and socially beneficial.
Data-First Verification with the Veritree App
Dive into how Veritree’s app is used on the ground to record species, planting density, and survival rates, with monitoring checkpoints every three months for up to three years — even in low-connectivity environments.
Drones, Baselines & Survival Monitoring
Explore how multispectral and optical drone imagery is used to establish baselines, verify planting activity, monitor mangrove survival, and ensure no pre-existing forests are counted.
Biodiversity Monitoring for the Long Term
Hear how bioacoustic sensors are being deployed to track bird presence over time, why biodiversity gains take years to materialise, and how Veritree avoids overpromising short-term outcomes.
Social Impact & Long-Term Stewardship
Discover how restoration activities are improving incomes, supporting education, and creating long-term employment pathways, including beekeeping, while transitioning monitoring responsibilities to national forest services after Veritree’s direct involvement.
Building Trust for Corporate Nature Action
Learn why Veritree’s verification-first approach resonates with corporate partners seeking credible, non-controversial nature action and protection against greenwashing.
