About Event

Screen the experiments. Break down the workflows. Keep the human in the loop.

AI filmmaking is moving fast enough that a tool demo can feel old before the night is over.

Each month, filmmakers, editors, writers, VFX artists, sound people, creative technologists, and curious weirdos gather at Multimodal Media Lab to watch what people are making, unpack the workflows behind it, and talk honestly about what these tools are doing to the craft.

June lands about a year after this community first started gathering, and the room has a vibe now: human creativity first, no gatekeeping, show the messy middle.

We have seen prompt challenges turn into tiny genre films. We have watched sound design rescue rough AI video from the uncanny valley. We have compared models, broken workflows, rebuilt them, and learned that the real skill is not worshipping one tool. It is orchestration: knowing which tool belongs where, and keeping the story in charge.

For this one, bring the good stuff and the hard stuff.

  • Bring a short piece you are working on.

  • Bring a shot that will not behave.

  • Bring a strange prompt challenge result.

  • Bring a workflow, a failure, a breakthrough, a question about ethics, labour, ownership, disclosure, craft, taste, or what the hell “AI film” even means now.

We will screen work, trade practical notes, dig into tools across video, audio, writing, VFX, editing, and post, and make space for the questions that do not fit neatly into a tutorial.

This is for people who want to make films, not just talk about the future of film.

Scenes from recent AI Film Club nights

A few archive moments from past Film Club gatherings at MML: screenings, demos, hallway conversations, and the kind of room you are walking into on June 11.

Featured Artist: Eric Gonzalez

Documentary director and producer Eric Gonzalez has built his career on delivering high-stakes stories with nuance and impact, collaborating with the Wall Street Journal, ESPN/X-Games, CBC, and directing RBC Spotlight, an eight-episode Olympic series for CBC's Paris 2024 coverage.

Now Calgary-based, Eric grew up in Trail, BC and Vancouver, and that hometown DNA is all over his latest project: a GTA V-styled portrait of Vancouver life, made entirely with Google Flow and other AI film tools, that's lighting up Instagram with tens of thousands of likes and climbing fast.

If you've spent more than five minutes in this city, you'll feel every frame. A deadpan Russian mafia VO narrates the contradictions of Canada's most expensive city: mushroom dispensaries, Lululemon yoga culture, Yaletown glass towers, the DTES, all rendered in glorious lo-fi open-world absurdity.

It's the kind of work that only someone who really sees a place could make, and it's exactly the creative energy the BC + AI Film Festival exists to celebrate.

What happens at Film Club

We combine film screenings with technical deep-dives, creative experiments, and real talk about how AI is changing production, post, distribution, and storytelling itself.

This is about filmmakers taking control of the tools, understanding what's possible, and deciding how we want to use them.

Hosts:

Kevin Friel: Nura Studios filmmaker, VFX artist, AI film production specialist with 25+ years traditional + cutting-edge generative workflows. The "Punk Rock AI" guy.

Kris Krüg: Creative technologist and community instigator exploring how AI reshapes culture, creativity, and collective power.

Our Philosophy

Human Creativity First: AI as tool, not replacement. Artist maintains creative control. Artistic integrity paramount.

Transparency: Disclose AI usage. Be honest about capabilities and limitations. Share learnings openly.

Collaboration: Support fellow filmmakers. Share knowledge generously. Build together, not compete.

Accessibility: Tools for all budget levels. Democratize filmmaking technology. Support emerging creators.

AI Tools We Explore

  • Scriptwriting: AI writing assistants, character development, story structure

  • Visual Production: Runway, Pika, Veo, Kling, Midjourney, ComfyUI

  • Post-Production: AI editing, color grading, VFX generation, enhancement

  • Audio & Music: Udio, Suno, ElevenLabs, sound effect generation

  • Marketing: Trailer generation, social media content, audience analytics

Community Culture

150 filmmakers and creatives in our WhatsApp community. Active discussions about tools, techniques, collaborations, and creative experiments.

Monthly screenings since June 2025. Planning 2nd Annual BC + AI Film Festival for October 2026. Building BC as a creative AI filmmaking hub.

How to Participate

  1. Attend the meetups: show up, watch, discuss, connect.

  2. Join the WhatsApp group: keep trading tool tips, collaborations, and support.

  3. Share your work: bring projects, experiments, questions, and creative energy.

AI Film Club is where filmmakers take control of the future. Come watch films. Learn tools. Make stuff. Connect with other creators doing the same.

See you at the meetups!

About BC + AI Ecosystem Association

BC + AI is the province-wide layer: a community-driven, nonprofit industry association built to create public-interest infrastructure for AI in British Columbia.

Not a corporate lobby. Not a think tank. A commons where meetups turn into working groups, prototypes turn into shared tools, and community values turn into governance.

Vancouver AI was just the start. The ecosystem keeps growing across BC... Surrey, Victoria, Kelowna, and beyond... each node bringing its own culture, needs, and experiments.

About Vancouver AI

Vancouver AI is a neural network of curious humans mapping the terrain between technology and consciousness. We bridge art galleries and research labs, corporate towers and garage workshops because the future doesn’t get built in one kind of room.

We run monthly gatherings where builders, researchers, artists, educators, founders, and students trade demos, tools, ethics, and hard questions. No gatekeeping. No outside agenda. Just a self-organizing community that gives a damn about where this revolution goes and who gets to steer.
