Inside the Admissions Office: What Colleges Really Want & How to Deliver it
Who this is for: Parents of 9th, 10th and 11th graders (Students are also welcome to attend.)
The college admissions landscape has changed dramatically since today’s parents applied to college. What was once a relatively straightforward process has become more competitive, complex, and stressful.
But it doesn’t have to feel that way! With the right information and guidance, families can approach the college journey with clarity and confidence—and even enjoy the process of planning the future with their teen.
In this presentation, Michelle McAnaney, founder of The College Spy and a college admissions expert, takes parents behind the scenes of the admissions office. She’ll share what colleges really look for when reviewing applications, and how students can align their choices in high school to stand out in the admissions pool.
Drawing on her experience guiding hundreds of families through this process, Michelle will also provide grade-by-grade advice to help parents support their teens effectively at every stage. Topics include:
● What should my teen focus on? Academic rigor, GPA, SAT/ACT or activities?
● How to choose and describe extracurriculars that impress admissions officers
● The surprising role of character in the admissions process
● What “demonstrated interest” means—and whether it truly matters
● Why “college fit” is the key to both acceptance and long-term success Parents will leave with a clearer understanding of how admissions decisions are made and practical steps to help their student become a compelling applicant.
