This talk is a summary of technical challenges of working on rate limiting at Spotify for a year. We will introduce and explain Envoy proxy, the proxy used by every major cloud providers, and how to extend it with filters. We'll present rate limit algorithms and their tradeoffs. Finally, we'll show a real outage and the lessons learned.
