About the Exhibition 🖼️

Territoire Frontière Monde draws on the legacy of the landmark 1989 exhibition Magiciens de la Terre, which brought together one hundred artists from five continents and challenged Western-centric narratives of contemporary art. By presenting artists from different cultural contexts on equal footing, it marked a pivotal shift in how global artistic practices were seen and understood.

Building on this history, the exhibition proposes an “imaginary map” structured through three fluid notions: Territory, Border, and World. These are not fixed categories, but shifting intensities that shape artistic expression.

From works rooted in cultural, ritual, and social contexts (Territory), to those engaging circulating signs and shared visual languages (World), and practices that move between both (Border), the exhibition brings together artists including Esther Mahlangu, Cyprien Tokoudagba, Efiaimbelo, Chéri Samba, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Bodys Isek Kingelez, and others.

Together, these works trace a broader narrative of contemporary art that resists singular histories, instead opening up a more expansive, interconnected understanding of artistic production.

About the Gallery 🖋️

Magnin-A is a Paris-based gallery with a longstanding commitment to artists from Africa and its diaspora. Building on decades of curatorial research and collaboration, the gallery has played a key role in shaping the visibility and recognition of contemporary African art within a global context.

Through exhibitions, publications, and sustained engagement with artists, Magnin-A continues to contribute to expanding narratives around global art histories.

My take on the exhibition by Art Gallivant :

I’m particularly drawn to this exhibition for its historical impact on how we view and exhibit global art today. It feels especially relevant to revisit this moment now, as conversations around representation, authorship, and global exchange continue to evolve.

It’s also incredible to see how some of my favourite African artists were part of this moment, and how their work continues to hold a permanent and influential place within contemporary African art on a global stage.

There is something powerful in seeing how these frameworks — Territory, Border, World — still resonate, offering ways to think through movement, identity, and cultural translation. It opens up space to reflect on how artistic practices are shaped across geographies, and how we, as viewers, locate ourselves within these shifting narratives.

Limited spots. Intimate group. Shared reflection.
We look forward to welcoming you for an afternoon of photography, wine, and conversation.
