G3CoP knowledge sharing session: Sanitation as Infrastructure for Climate Adaptation
Sanitation infrastructure — often invisible, undervalued, and chronically underfunded — remains a critical yet overlooked pillar of climate adaptation, particularly across the Global South. This session will explore why investing in resilient sanitation systems must be treated as a strategic priority for adaptation planning and public policy, and how community-based processes can help reframe infrastructure as a vehicle for justice and resilience.
Led by Lígia Da Paz, Director of Mandí, a Belém-based organization working at the intersection of community participation, advocacy, and public policy, the discussion will examine the city’s experience with sanitation as a foundation for equitable adaptation. Lígia will also share insights on Belém’s evolving role as host of COP30 — reflecting on how global climate narratives are being territorialized and materialized on the ground through local governance and urban transformations.
Participants will gain insights into how the synthesis of sanitation systems can reduce vulnerability, enhance public health, and strengthen climate adaptation strategies in rapidly urbanizing regions.
On the road to COP30, this session offers a chance to deepen understanding of Belém’s local realities and prepare the community to engage more meaningfully with the context in which the next UN Climate Conference will take place.
