About Event

REDEYE presents CALABASH, a film, music, and art festival in collaboration with Jumbi, marking the first day of Peckham Festival. This one-day event celebrates intergenerational voices and artistic expression in response to displacement and cultural erasure within communities in Peckham and beyond.

FILM SCREENING:

One Hand Don’t Clap, but it sets the rhythm of the day. Grab your tickets and join us for a special screening of Kaveri Kaul’s classic. One Hand Don’t Clap is a documentary that traces the legacy of calypso music through the lives of Trinidadian icons Lord Kitchener and Calypso Rose, with post film discussion lovingly served by Nigel Rewunde.

WORKSHOPS & ACTIVATIONS:

Peckham’s got the best soil for building community, so we’ve packed our roster with plenty of participatory activities throughout the day.

Reimagine tomorrow with Sara Hawke in her speculative future banner workshop.

Sip & Paint your way through memories and family bonds with Portland N' Pals as your guide.

The Library is where you will find a special curation by SEEDARCHIVE and writer and cultural producer Yaya Azariah Clarke. This space is dedicated to celebrating and interacting with traditional African and Caribbean art, design, and culture through a curated collection of objects and books.

LIVE MUSIC:

Don’t worry, we’ve got the music covered too. Expect live sounds in the evening, intergenerational sounds in our very own Sound Calabash, our DJs will speak their stories through an exchange of sound, and a good ol’ fashioned get down.
