Build Day Wellington
Build Day Wellington
Intro
Powerful AI tools have changed what it takes to build a website or app. What used to need a degree and years of experience can now happen in days, which means a lot more people get to come to the table.
If you've got an idea, for yourself, your whānau, your business, or your community, you can build it. Build Day is a space to learn, make, and ship it together.
The vibe
Build Day is a learning environment first. No experience is too little, no question is too basic, no idea is too small. We're building a space where people help each other, share what they're figuring out, and celebrate what everyone makes, not just the most technical project. Be kind, be curious, be generous with what you know.
Come as you are
We want this to feel welcoming whether you're the kind of person who walks in and chats to everyone, or the kind who'd rather keep to yourself and focus on building. Participation is opt-in throughout the day. When we do intros, for example, you raise your hand only if you'd like to give one. Same goes for show & tell at the end. No-one will be put on the spot, and quietly getting on with your thing is a perfectly good way to spend the day.
Psychological safety
We truly believe that when people feel safe, physically and psychologically, curiosity, kindness and magic blossom. Creating this kind of environment is of utmost importance, and if you're unable to participate in a way conducive to it, you'll be asked to leave. This event has zero tolerance for hate of any kind or unconstructive negativity.
On AI
We know AI isn't without its issues, from energy consumption to questions around creative rights. This isn't an event about hype. It's about understanding what these tools can do by actually using them, thinking critically about how and where they're useful, and making something that matters to you.
Q&A
Who is this for? Do you need to be technical? Everyone's welcome, especially folks who aren't technical or haven't built an app or website before. The facilitators will guide you through it, and there's an optional learning session in the morning (see the schedule) for anyone who'd like to be taken through the basics.
Is this just for business-focussed websites and apps? Not at all. Maybe you want to solve a problem in your own life, or bring people together for activism, or build something just for fun. All brilliant. Commercial ideas are welcome, but they're not the focus.
What do I need to bring? Ideally a laptop. If that's not possible, reach out and we'll do our best to sort one for you.
Is lunch provided? No, lunch is BYO. There are plenty of good spots nearby to grab something, or bring your own kai if you'd prefer.
