Beyond the Hype: Early AI Governance and Implementation Lessons in Community Health
Empowering safety net health organizations to harness AI for better patient outcomes, improved care provider experience and operational excellence
“AI in Action: Practical Applications for Safety Net Providers” is a monthly Zoom series, co-hosted by Center for Care Innovations the Health AI Partnership, and AllianceChicago, dedicated to exploring research and implementation of AI based solutions that address the unique challenges and opportunities within Federally Qualified Health Centers and safety net healthcare organizations, promoting equitable access and improved patient outcomes.
Beyond the Hype: Early AI Governance and Implementation Lessons in Community Health
Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other safety net healthcare organizations are facing many challenges, compounded by their limited resources from razor-thin margins. Similar to other healthcare organizations, FQHCs also receive constant pitches from vendors offering new AI solutions to address many of these same challenges. While FQHCs can benefit from these AI solutions, they are also especially vulnerable to AI risks like bias and discrimination, and, historically, have not been partners in building/training the AI solutions being offered to them. In many cases, it's unclear how the AI tools/solutions will perform at an FQHC.
In this presentation, the Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC), an FQHC serving the Phillips Neighborhood of South Minneapolis, will share its journey as a participant in the inaugural cohort of the Health AI Partnership practice network. While CUHCC’s initial plan to deploy an operational predictive analytic was delayed, the team pivoted to establishing a sturdy foundation for future AI governance, building organizational confidence to evaluate, pilot, implement, and track new AI tools and solutions. Attendees will learn how to initiate AI governance, including options for organizational tools, structures, and change management strategies to champion the use of responsible AI implementation at a low-resource organization.
