“Pelita Asa: Stories of Community, Climate Action, and a Just Energy Transition”
Across Southeast Asia, the transition away from coal has implications that extend beyond changes in energy technologies. For coal-dependent communities, it also involves questions of livelihoods, environmental recovery, access to clean energy, and participation in decisions that shape the transition.
Ensuring meaningful community participation is therefore an important element of a just energy transition. Community-led renewable energy initiatives can provide practical examples of how local actors contribute to the transition while addressing local energy needs.
In this context, the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) will convene a documentary screening and discussion entitled: “Pelita Asa: Stories of Community, Climate Action, and a Just Energy Transition”.
The documentary “Pelita Asa” presents the experience of communities in East Kalimantan that have developed and managed community-based solar systems, illustrating how communities can take an active role in shaping their own energy transition.
The session will bring community perspectives into the regional just energy transition discussion, examine its social dimensions beyond technological change, and draw lessons from Indonesia for Southeast Asia.
The screening will be followed by a moderated conversation, “Talk Session & Movie Screening: Just Energy Transition & Environmental Activism” with community voices and a policy discussant.
