Nix: Experiences and Perspectives

Nix is dearly loved yet intensely complex. It's the combination build system/programming language/operating system that wants to do it all. But, is it the right tool for all of these jobs? Or, is it a hammer in search of nails?

In this talk, I will present Nix to a curious audience, from the perspective a reluctant Nix user in a research environment.

We will celebrate what Nix gets right—in particular, by comparison to Docker—, then we will discuss the many thorns in the current experience of using Nix. We will look at Nix's place in relation to other build / package tools, and we will conclude by speculating on future directions to improve its usefulness and friendliness.
