About Event

TRIPTYCH presents a letter is a thread, a guided writing workshop. Whether addressed to a friend, a family member, or a lover, physical letters are scratched with longing and intimacies that extend beyond the textual, infused into the spatial process of stretching a line of correspondence across distances and time.

This session on the epistolary will be loosely guided by a principle of evocation, a chance to summon and resurface hidden desires, memories, images, or words we may be stuck on, and a wish to exchange them with someone else in mind. A letter in its most basic form is the relational desire to communicate something, to someone--even if its contents remain unsent. Facilitated by TRIPTYCH member Dhvani Ramanujam, this workshop will begin with thinking through the letter as a poetic form, a gestural practice, and a transmission of longing. We will sift through and read copies of letters from other writers, artists, and filmmakers (like Carolee Schneemann’s letters to James Tenney and co., or the correspondence between Hervé Guibert and Eugène Savitzkaya), after which these materials may join our assemblage of creative material to draw from in our own letter-writing practice. In this session, we also encourage participants to get experimental, sumptuous, and tactile with their letter-making process.

This workshop will also feature an art installation by Caitlyn Murphy and Salma Ragheb, and a musical performance by poolblood.

poolblood, the musical nom-de-plume of Toronto’s Maryam Said, is an ethereal spirit of alt rock, swirling and dancing in the air with a collection of  orchestrated bedroom pop music.

Caitlyn Murphy is a painter and illustrator living in Toronto.

Salma Ragheb is an artist and writer who currently lives in Toronto.
