Lightning Talk: A Cyber Crime Story from the Other Side

April 5, 2013, shortly after midnight. A man wearing sunglasses, a scarf over his mouth and a motorcycle helmet stands at an ATM and withdraws €1,000 that isn’t his. A few metres away, his older brother keeps watch.

What neither of them knows is that they are about to be caught in the act and arrested by the Bavarian State Criminal Police.

The charge: computer fraud against Deutsche Bahn.

The man keeping watch was Emre.*

This November, Emre joins Berlin Cybersecurity Social to share the story of how two brothers came up with the idea, why their scheme worked for as long as it did, the mistake that brought everything crashing down, and what happened after they were caught.

This is a candid conversation about cybercrime from the inside: the choices that led there, the reality of prison, and the difficult process of rebuilding a life afterwards.

About the Speaker: Today, Emre builds software for companies. *Name changed to protect his identity.
