Bioloon - Founder Q&A for Angel Investors
Bioloon has cracked a problem that the latex industry has failed to solve: a latex that biodegrades without costing more or performing worse.
Co-founders Charlotte and Christie-Lee lived the problem before they solved it, handling thousands of balloons a year at their event planning studio, they saw the regulatory and commercial pressure for a biodegradable alternative and funded a PhD at Imperial College to produce it.
The world buys 20-25 billion latex balloons a year - a $3.5B market growing 6% annually. However, those balloons fragment into microplastics and leach carcinogens, causing long-term harm to wildlife and human health. Bioloon’s latex performs like a conventional balloon but breaks down in a compost heap within nine months, and does so at roughly 5% cheaper than conventional latex. The same chemistry extends across a $40B+ latex category that includes gloves, condoms, and apparel.
Bioloon is early by design: a pre-seed bet on smart chemistry and an exceptional founder-market fit. They’re running a capital-light licensing model with low supply chain risk and easy manufacturability, driven by a team with a cracking commercialisation record.
