Afrofuturism 101
Origins. Evolution. Futures.
Afrofuturism 101 is a three-hour virtual course exploring the cultural movement that has transformed how we imagine Black life across time.
Taught through Ingrid LaFleur’s two decades of curatorial practice and her work as a futurist, this course traces Afrofuturism from its ancestral roots and pre-1994 expressions to its formal naming by Mark Dery, and through its global expansion in music, literature, film, visual art, and political thought.
More than a historical overview, this course positions Afrofuturism as a living, adaptive framework that offers tools for reimagining technology, governance, memory, pleasure, and possibility.
Whether you are new to Afrofuturism or seeking a deeper grounding in its lineage and trajectory, Afrofuturism 101 offers critical context, cultural insight, and imaginative expansion.
Come ready to think across time.
