Jane's Walk - The Surveillance Stroll
Each day, we pass buildings and streets with cameras recording our movements, all hidden in plain sight. Have you ever wondered what role do cameras and other technologies around you play? How do they square against our nation’s privacy laws?
Join Technologists for Democracy on a walk from Union to St Andrew’s as we lead you on a privacy check over PATH to better understand how privacy laws and rights look in practice across Toronto. Participants will use a ‘Privacy Checklist’ on the way to identify potential data collecting devices such as cameras and sensors. Participants will select up to 5 tracking technologies on the way and score them. A higher score will indicate higher number of red flags, translating to increased concern.
On the way, the leader and volunteers will help you understand the different aspects of privacy laws in Canada, what they mean, and how they translate into questions on the Checklist. The objective of The Surveillance Stroll is to help participants identify surveillance tech and privacy breach in crowded areas.
Come, join us and learn more about your rights!
