About the Workshop

The Intertemporal Ink Lab invites you this Lunar New Year to a sensory journey through anthropology, ritual, and contemporary art. Let brush and ink transform bodily sensation into visible traces, infusing intention like drawing talismans, moving freely like walking, capturing the "unspeakable" body memories and New Year blessings. We'll traverse from primal civilizations through southern Chinese shamanic scripts, Australian Aboriginal Songlines, contemporary Asemic Writing, to the "water calligraphy" of park grandpas, seeking unity between body and brushstroke. In the hands-on session, Huiqi guides you to channel bodily rhythm into ink, creating your own non-textual spring couplets to inscribe spiritual energy upon your threshold. All are welcome, whether ink novice or practitioner, to craft couplets imbued with your personal spirit.

Instructor

Huiqi He is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher whose practice is rooted in local experiences, rituals, and memories. She lets fluid queer experiences and practices disperse, touch, and connect within the interstices of forests in cross-cultural spaces. Huiqi's work focuses on the shamanic practices and narratives of southern China, combining ethnographic research methods with personal bodily sensory experiences to create multimedia works such as video, ink painting, installation, and performance. Huiqi graduated with a BFA in Chinese Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, an MFA in Art Practice from the School of Visual Arts, and an MA in Visual Anthropology from Goldsmiths.
