Loom Weaving 101
Join us for Loom Weaving 101: a two-session deep dive into modern tapestry weaving where you'll learn the foundational techniques to create any weaving you can imagine, dream up a project of your own, and bring it to life in a collaborative group setting.
When & Where: May 31st & June 7th from 1 - 3:30pm at the ATL Craft Club Studio
What You'll Learn:
Session 1 (May 31st, 1-3:30pm):We’ll cover the foundations, learn how to start weaving on the loom with a handful of essential stitches (tabby stitch, twining, rya knots, and soumack) which you can mix, match and riff on to achieve almost any style, discuss best practices for weaving, and explore composition and color.
Between Sessions:Practice the techniques we learned, gather inspiration and start sketching out a concept for your original weaving design
Session 2 (June 7th, 1-3:30pm):Bring your vision to life! Begin weaving your original tapestry with hands-on guidance every step of the way.
FAQ:
What’s included? Your take-home weaving kit includes a 10” Beka frame loom and tapestry needle, Flax & Twine warp thread, a finishing needle, and paper spacer. During class, you’ll have access to a variety of wool and acrylic yarn and roving, colored warp thread, scissors, and tapestry combs to share. You’ll also walk away with a list of supply resources and educational videos to support you in your practice.
Can I bring my own yarn? Yes, absolutely! We’ll have a variety of wool and acrylic yarn and roving available, but you’re more than welcome to bring any materials you already have.
Will there be homework? A little - but the fun kind! In the two weeks between sessions, you’ll practice the techniques we learned in session 1 and start dreaming up an idea for the weaving you want to begin executing in week 2. In this time, feel free to gather inspiration, sketch, or try out ideas on your loom, and order any additional supplies you may need to bring your idea to life.
Do I need any prior experience? Nope! This workshop is designed for absolute beginners. If you've never touched a loom before, you're in the right place. If you've taken an intro workshop and want more in-depth instruction, you're also in the right place!
What size will my finished piece be? Your tapestry will be approximately 8x12" (or longer depending on your fringe length). It's the perfect size for a wall hanging or to frame!
What if I can't make one of the sessions? Both sessions are required to complete the workshop experience. Please make sure you can attend both May 17 and May 31 before purchasing your ticket.
What if I need help between sessions? I've got you! We'll provide resources and support as you practice and refine your design between Session 1 and Session 2.
Can I bring a friend? Absolutely! Just make sure they grab their own ticket since space is limited to 15 people.
Parking
Parking is free and located in the gravel lot at the end of Mangum Street.
