Shop Class: Intro to 3D Printing and CAD (Fusion 360)
Learn To Design & 3D Print Useful Things with Fusion 360
Learn the fundamentals of 3D printing and CAD modeling by designing and printing a real object from scratch.
In this hands-on workshop at Desk Job Design Lab, you’ll learn how 3D printers actually work, how to avoid common print failures, and how to design your own parts in Fusion 360 so you can make functional objects instead of just downloading files.
🛠️ WHAT YOU'LL DO
Learn the basics of how 3D printing works (and why prints fail)
Learn CAD modeling in Fusion 360
Design a simple functional object from scratch
Prep your model for printing (orientation, supports, strength)
Slice your file using real print settings
Start your print (or queue it) and learn how to iterate
🎓 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
Fusion 360 (CAD)
sketching + constraints
dimensions and parametric modeling
extrude/cut, fillets/chamfers
Designing functional parts
fit + tolerance (snug vs loose)
strength and durability
holes, mounts, clips, and enclosures
3D printing essentials
orientation + layer strength
infill, perimeters, supports
avoiding common failures (warping, weak parts, ugly overhangs)
🧑💻 WHO THIS IS FOR
This workshop is beginner-friendly and designed for anyone who’s curious about prototyping. Great for:
people who’ve never used a 3D printer before
creatives/designers who want to learn CAD
anyone who wants to start making custom parts and tools
No prior CAD or 3D printing experience required.
🎯 REQUIREMENTS
Bring your laptop
Fusion 360 must be installed before the workshop
Optional: send your idea in advance
If you already know what you want to make, you’re welcome to send your idea (or a reference photo + rough dimensions) before the workshop. This helps me pre-check feasibility and suggest tweaks so you can hit the ground running.
⏱️ PRINTING NOTE
We’ll design and prep your part for printing during class. Depending on print time and queue, your part will either:
print during the session, or
be printed after class for pickup (no extra cost)
🙋 INSTRUCTOR
This workshop will be taught by Desk Job founder Ari Zade, a Brooklyn-based designer and engineer.
